The Opportunity

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.


The CSIRO’s Deep Earth Imaging Future Science Platform and the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University (ANU) have entered into a partnership to establish InLab, an inference research vehicle to be based at the ANU. A key activity of InLab (www.inlab.edu.au) is the development of CoFI an envisaged Common Framework for Inference, which seeks to provide industry, academia and government with a framework underpinning training, services and research in the development of inference methods. 


Complex multi-data and highly non-linear inference problems arise when for example combining multiple geophysical datasets and seeking to extract the information contained in complex geo-datasets. Addressing this challenge requires access to the next generation of geodata inference approaches. CoFI seeks to facilitate this by providing domain experts with access to sophisticated geodata inference approaches underpinning resource delineation and characterisation nationally and internationally. The CERC postdoctoral fellow will play a key role in the design, development and rollout of CoFI with a particular focus on compiling, documenting and implementing a set of relevant examples demonstrating the use of CoFI to solve inference problems in the geoscience domain, including but not limited to geology, hydrology, geochemistry and geophysics.

Your duties will include:

  • Playing a key role in the implementation of CoFI by contributing to the design, development and integration of inference algorithms and the formulation of a relevant example problem set.
  • Actively engaging with domain experts to compile an example problem set for CoFI that is of relevance to domain experts within CSIRO and the wider community.
  • Interacting with the CSIRO’s Deep Earth Imaging Future Science Platform in support of its science goals, for example inference projects centred around latent variables in models and data.
  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Recording, managing, and analysing data/information using relevant domain data science techniques.


Location: Black Mountain, Canberra, ACT
Salary: AU$86k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as geophysics or applied mathematics. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Proven track record around developing and implementing complex mathematical concepts and algorithms efficiently.
  • Capability to build and maintain effective working relationships with domain experts to identify, implement and document test problems that will form the set of examples underpinning CoFI.
  • Understanding of inference methods, Machine Learning and AI and their relevance in the geoscience domain.
  • An ability to understand, and engage with, the needs and interests of stakeholders from a range of backgrounds including industry, education, government and academia.
