Position will be primarily to work on developing a new process for making Li-ion battery cathodes at the Materials Engineering Research Facility. The work would entail running a continuous stirred tank reactor to produce high quality Li-ion battery cathode precursor. Then taking those precursors and optimizing a calcination recipe to achieve the highest performance material possible. The postdoctoral appointee would be responsible for performing or having others perform a variety of characterizations including ICP, XRD, PSA, SEM and electrochemical performance tests. Once processes are established, these processes will be scaled up to kg quantities and the resulting material tested in larger format cells.
In addition to work on the above project, the postdoctoral appointee will have the opportunity to work on a number of other projects. These projects could include work on battery recycling through the ReCell center and plastics recycling. Work is also beginning on improving processes for creating the raw ingredients for Li-ion battery cathode production.
PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science (those with other degrees (PhD), but have similar skills to those listed will be considered)
Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization.

Flexibility to change projects and work on a variety of projects simultaneously.
Knowledge in the following areas and techniques is desirable: Li-ion batteries, XRD, SEM, electrochemical testing, running reactors, recycling, separations.
