Postdoctoral/Research Associate Positions
Position 1 - Postdoctoral/Research Associate Position in the Energy Forecasting & Planning (CODE: PDF-EFP)
We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and some experience in integrated resource planning and modelling focused on energy demand and supply. We are developing environmental footprints (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, $/tonne of CO2) of energy demand and supply sectors for a particular jurisdiction. The individual should have some experience working with relevant energy forecasting and planning models (e.g., LEAP, MARKAL).
The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). The candidate will have an opportunity to develop and initiate new research activities in relevant areas and supervise junior researchers. In addition, the candidate will have an opportunity to teach relevant courses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta based on their background.
The successful candidate will join an active group of researchers in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering supported by a large consortium made up of industry and government. The position is initially for two years and may be extended. The remuneration is commensurate with qualifications. Position 2 - Postdoctoral/Research Associate Position in Biomass and Bioenergy Systems Engineering/Biorefinery (CODE: PDF-BIOMOD)
We are looking for individuals with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering with a focus on biomass. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and research experience in modelling biomass-based energy conversion systems, specifically in the conversion of forest- and agriculture-based biomass or other organic waste to fuels and chemicals. The candidate should have experience developing techno-economic models for the estimation of the viability of these types of energy systems. The individual should also have some experience in modeling biomass conversion processes using relevant tools (e.g., Aspen Plus).
The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). The candidate will have an opportunity to develop and initiate new research activities in relevant areas and supervise junior researchers. The candidate will have an opportunity to teach relevant courses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering based on their background.

Position 3 - Postdoctoral/Research Associate Position in Biomass Processing and Conversion (CODE: PDF-BIOEXP)
We are looking for individuals with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering with a focus on biomass. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and research experience in biomass processing (e.g., pelletization, densification) and the thermochemical conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals, specifically in the conversion of forest- and agriculture-based biomass or other organic waste. The candidate should have experience in conducting experimental work on biomass processing and conversion. Some experience in modeling biomass conversion processes using relevant tools is an asset.
The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). The candidate will have an opportunity to develop and initiate new research activities in relevant areas and supervise junior researchers. The candidate will have an opportunity to teach relevant courses in the Department of Mechanical Engineering based on their background.

Position 4 - Postdoctoral/Research Associate Position in Energy and Environmental Systems Engineering (CODE: PDF-CIR)
We are looking for an individual with research experience in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. Individuals applying for this position should have an interest and research experience in modeling carbon-intensive energy conversion systems, specifically in the conversion and processing of natural gas, oil, and coal to other forms of energy. The candidate should have experience in developing process models for the estimation of the viability of these types of energy systems. The individual should also have some experience in process modeling using relevant tools (e.g., Aspen Plus).
The candidate is expected to carry out research on assigned project(s). The candidate will have an opportunity to develop and initiate new research activities in relevant areas and supervise junior researchers. The candidate will have an opportunity to teach relevant courses in engineering based on their background in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
