The mission of the Center for Computational Biomedicine is to leverage data and computation to transform research and improve health. We achieve that goal through designing and engineering software infrastructure projects using state-of-the-art computational methods. We are looking for an experienced software engineer with expertise in building reusable components for scientific investigations to join our highly collaborative and diverse team. The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects, they will help design and implement software components in R and Python. They will help set standards and train team members in different aspects of software development and design.

Typical Core Duties
Participate fully in software development life cycle
Research, design, and implement technical solutions to deliver business requirements
Identify opportunities to improve and simplify applications portfolio and implement related enhancements
Contribute to creation and maturing of software development best practices and new technologies
Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients and to mentor junior staff
Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
BSc in Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology or related field preferred
5 years experience writing scientific software in R or Python
Track record of producing high-quality scientific software for others to use
Good communication skills
Ability to work to deadlines in a dynamic fast-paced environment
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
Experience publishing and supporting scientific software packages
Experience in some aspects of bioinformatics, computational biology, or genetics
Experience with R Studio Connect
Graduate training in bioinformatics, genetics, or computational biology
Knowledge of visualization methods
Knowledge of containerized workflows
Certificates and Licenses
Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
This Staff role may start as a remote position due to the COVID-19 pandemic and while restrictions are still in place. The current remote nature of this role is considered temporary and may change as the University continues to evaluate options. While we continue to monitor the evolving COVID-19 guidelines, local on-campus work may be expected for some roles. Harvard Medical School does support flexible schedules, subject to individual departments’ business needs.
