If so, the RF Microsystems department is seeking a creative, motivated Postdoctoral Appointee with a passion for applying innovations in nano- and micro-technology to the miniaturization of future integrated microsystems for emerging national security applications. The selected candidate will assume a key role within a team that interfaces across technology developers and application customers to improve system performance through new understanding and integration in a broad range of technologies that include solid-state electronic devices, miniaturized piezoelectric devices, high-speed interconnect and integration, and devices that exploit new nanoscale materials and physics. No one candidate is expected to meet all of the desired qualifications, but the successful candidate will apply their abilities to specific activities, while also broadening their skills and perspectives to make valuable contributions in one or more areas that range from fundamental materials science and devices, through circuit and components, and up to sub-system architecture. On any given day, one may be called upon to: + Plan and perform experimental research involving novel materials and device technologies, and the application and improvement of existing and emerging technologies to meet specific performance needs and targets + Work within and across teams to design, prototype, analyze, and evaluate multi-technology microsystems that achieve performance beyond what is available with single technology solutions + Publish original research in top-tier journals and conference proceedings + Formally and informally communicate results and findings to co-workers and customers through discussions, presentations, and written reports + Identify, develop, and pursue new technology opportunities in areas that support Sandia mission activities

Required:
+ A PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or a closely related field + Experience with nano- or micro-scale device technologies, physics, and modeling + The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE-Q level security clearance

Desired:
+ Interest in enabling next-generation advances in quantum information, ultra-low-power RF microsystems, electromagnetic interference mitigation, and other areas + Experience with, and interest in, multi-physics modeling using commercially available simulation tools in one or more of the mechanical, thermal, semiconductor, electromagnetic, and/or optical domains + Experience in design and characterization of analog, high-speed digital, RF, or microwave devices or circuits + Experience with microelectronics realization including requirements definition, device behavior, circuit design, mask layout, fabrication, testing, and documentation + Experience with laboratory test and measurement of analog and RF components using tools such as high-speed oscilloscopes, network analyzers, parameter analyzers, and probe stations + A familiarity with microscale packaging and integration techniques as well as approaches for microsystem rapid prototyping and integration + Proficiency with software for data analysis and instrument control in languages such as C#, LabVIEW, MATLAB, or Python + Strong academic performance as evidenced by minimum cumulative GPA(s) of 3.2/4.0 for each relevant undergraduate degree and 3.5/4.0 for each relevant graduate degree + A record of publication and innovation evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, issued patents, or successful project execution + The ability to work across teams and solve problems in a highly collaborative environment + Adaptability and flexibility to address rapidly advancing technologies and evolving customer needs + Strong self-motivation to work effectively as an independent contributor + Strong communication and interpersonal skills as needed to work successfully in a mission-oriented team environment

Department Description:

The RF Microsystems department performs research, design, modeling, characterization, and qualification of RF microelectronics. We have a focus on efficient, high performance RF component design and characterization, precision electromagnetic modeling for active and passive high frequency microwave structures, specialized frequency sources, as well as novel wireless sensor development. We have capabilities for developing between prototypes to fully qualified hardware. We provide unique solutions to our customers in nuclear weapons, DOD, DOE science, non-proliferation agencies, and subsystem departments (SAR, surety, & ISR). Our research interest include heterogeneous integration of various analog, optical, digital, and RF ICs, quantum computing electromagnetic simulation, advanced radar component design, and next generation resonators for clocks and frequency references. Security Clearance:
