Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700. : The Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML) within the Materials, Physics, and Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories seeks a hardworking scientist/engineer with expertise in the synthesis/characterization of complex precursors (organic and inorganic) for the production of tailored materials. You'll have experience in the development of air-sensitive precursors. This position requires the ability to function within a multi-disciplinary team environment working towards development of a variety of composite materials for a broad spectrum of national security challenges. On any given day you will be called on to: + Conduct fundamental research and development of existing/new ligand, metalorganic, and organometallic precursors as well as their subsequent composite designs with performance focused on extreme (thermal, radiological) environments + Characterization of the above materials ranging from bulk to nanomaterials. + Provide expert input on materials performance in a variety of settings using a wide range of analytical characterization techniques with a focus on determining the behavior of metal cations within unique organic matrices + Partner with scientists and engineers across Sandia in discovery, testing, certification and qualification approaches to address materials needs for a variety of applications + Assist in the development of new characterization techniques to understand materials performance Sandia Job Title: R&D Chemistry
+ PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related physical science with postdoctoral experience. A required focus on chemistry, materials science, or science with experience in materials discovery, analysis and development + Background in the synthesis and characterization of air-sensitive, coordination compounds (transition metal, lanthanide, and actinide), materials (organic and inorganic) precursors + Experience in synthesis of organic ligands that can coordinate selective cations with tailored response + A proven track record of publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional conferences + Able to acquire a DOE Q-level security clearance
+ Experience using data science methods, artificial intelligence, or machine learning as applied to chemical synthesis and materials discovery + Demonstrated expertise in the application of these complexes to real-world applications + Ability to rapidly search the literature and identify novel chemistries to undertake new routes to produce improved materials + Familiarity with the large-scale synthesis, manufacturing, and testing of radiation hard materials + Strong record of productivity with publications and presentations at national and international conferences + Experience in coordination chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide metals + Demonstrated experience ligand synthesis and subsequent metal production and conversion to ceramic materials on all size scales + Proven ability to handle complex syntheses of hazardous metals + Experience in working in a national security environment
The Advanced Materials Laboratory conducts R&D in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and novel processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of our external and internal customers. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; development and synthesis of composite materials, synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nanoscale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle “inks” and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Development of marine energy materials, Processing R&D includes; providing a “Direct Write” capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospinning of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize solar energy conversion, metalorganic vapor deposition (MOCVD), CO2 sequestration, and sophisticated medical treatments. Our customers include all of Sandia’s mission areas and numerous external collaborators.
