Job Description

Summary

The KLemon Lab at Baylor College of Medicine is hiring a Research Technician II. Our long-term goal is to identify bacterial strains and compounds that will be leads for new approaches to prevent and treat infections by nasal pathobionts and respiratory viruses. To achieve this, we are elucidating the molecular mechanisms of interspecies interactions in the human nasal microbiome. Research Technicians in the KLemon Lab perform a variety of experimental techniques and have multiple opportunities for mentored on-the-job skill building. Job Duties

  • Performs experiments using bioinformatics, bacterial cultivation, bioassay-guided fractionation, basic organic extraction, molecular biology and genetic engineering.
  • Participates in lab meetings and reads applicable literature.
  • Prepares figures and assists in writing related to experiments performed. 
  • Maintains general lab environment, including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance and repairs, organization and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with biosafety and laboratory regulations. 
  • Assists with lab supplies and inventory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • None Required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a basic science or equivalent education, preferably in microbiology, microbial ecology, biology, or chemical biology.
  • One year of lab research experience with bacteria is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in bacterial cultivation, excellent aseptic technique and general skills common to a microbiology lab are a plus. 
  • Experience with basic command line, and a working knowledge of R with experience performing bioinformatic analysis is a definite plus.

  • Good analytical and computer skills. 
  • Strong documentation and organizational skills with the ability to keep accurate records of all work performed.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques with guidance and mentoring.
  • Strong work ethic, including ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, use good judgment and complete duties. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a team with diverse backgrounds.
