Job Description

Under supervision, perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning and maintenance of facilities following proper procedures and techniques for equipment and cleaning products, as well as event set up/tear down as needed from scheduled events.

The Ball State University Student Center has a weekend opportunity for a part time custodian.  This is an ideal opening for a person who would like some extra hours on weekends.  

Job Function:

Under supervision, perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning and maintenance of facilities following proper procedures and techniques for equipment and cleaning products, as well as event set up/tear down as needed from scheduled events.

Minimum Education:

1.High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

Minimum Experience:

1.If required by assignment, must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy. 
2.Must be able to climb ladders and/or scaffolding of various heights to perform duties. 
3.Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, and University policies and procedures, communications, and perform basic mathematical calculations. 
4.No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, or other materials or environmental factors in custodial service. 
5.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty. 
6.Must successfully pass manlift certification, if position requires it, within a reasonable period of time after hire 
7.Must have at least one year work experience (full time or part time) 
8.You must be 18 years or older.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean, renovate, and renew, resilient, wood, and hard floor surface finishes, i.e., dust mop, sweep, wet mop, spot mop, scrub, polish and spray buff, strip, seal, wax, etc.
  • Maintain carpet floor coverings, i.e., vacuum, remove spots and stains, extraction cleaning of carpet and upholstered furniture.
  • Clean and service restrooms including lavatory, toilet, urinal, stalls, vents, etc.
  • Dust, vacuum, clean and/or polish furniture, surfaces; clean facilities, fixtures, hardware and windows; change lighting and clean fixtures as required.
  • Collect and dispose of trash, refuse, recycling materials, and debris into designated receptacles.
  • Sweep debris, and/or sweep or shovel snow from outside entrances, landings, steps, walks; clean exterior surfaces of windows, doors, and other building fixtures.
  • Clean, maintain, restock, and organize storage areas and equipment; report needed repairs of building and equipment to supervisor and/or group leader in written form, etc.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of job related chemicals, environmental, health, and physical concerns.
  • Lock and unlock doors in accordance with departmental policies and procedures; maintain security of assigned keys, pagers, and radios.
  • Set rooms according to custodial work sheet and customer specifications; arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment from room to room as requires; report items requiring repair to supervisor and/or group leaders; perform minor repairs to furniture and building fixtures.
  • Guide and assist in training student custodial employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
