Job Description

Cleveland Clinic is currently seeking qualified APRNs/PAs for the Emergency Department at Akron General. APRNs need to be Family Certified or have dual certification (such as Adult and Peds), in order to treat all age groups. Experience is preferred, however new graduates with ED experience as a RN or through clinical rotations will certainly be considered. Locations include Akron General Main hospital, as well as three satellites in Bath, Green and Stow. The Akron General Main hospital is a level one trauma center. Our advanced practice providers work closely with the physicians and residents, and enjoy a supportive and collegial work environment. The schedule expectation is 13, 12 hour shifts per month. The physician assistant functions in collaboration with a physician according to a supervisory agreement. The APRN functions in collaboration with a physician according to a standard care arrangement and specialty certification. Providers provide advanced care to patients with complex acute, critical, and chronic health conditions, including the delivery of acute care services.
  • Performs complete histories and physicals on patients of all ages to establish and record patient's current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan to provide continuing medical care, including daily examinations, writing orders, chart notes, discharging patients and completing discharge summaries.

  • Base hours exceed other patient care areas and expectations for 24/7 hour coverage of advanced critical care services role provide advanced care to patients with complex, acute, critical and chronic health conditions.
  • Advanced Critical care APRN's and PA's practice in a setting that requires the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to manage acute and chronic health problems. APRN's and PA's also practice in the settings requiring complex monitoring and therapies and high intensity medical/surgical interventions.
  • Conducts thorough medical histories, performs complete physical examinations (where indicated), initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of illness, and scrutinizes lab data on new and former clinic patients and hospital admissions to establish a record of the patient's current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan with direct review by a physician.
  • Must be able to work with autonomy within Ohio law under direction of collaborating/supervising physician. Performs and interprets, at least to the point of recognizing deviations from normal, common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes as privileged by CCAG Credentialing Board.
  • Performs routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, managing simple conditions produced by infection or trauma, assisting in the management of more complex illness and injury which may include assisting surgeons in conducting operations and taking initiative in performing evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations, as privileged by CCAG Credentialing Board.
  • Performs specialized procedures following approval by CCAG Credentialing Board.
  • Refers patients to providers as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment.
  • Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary.
  • Participates in quality monitoring thru the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes on a periodic basis to assure quality care.
  • Facilitates appropriate length of stay, discharge planning and compliance with regulatory standards for inpatient management.
  • May serve as clinical preceptor for APRN or PA students and other health professionals.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior.
  • Demonstrates compassion and professionalism and a commitment to excellent patient care.
  • Other duties as assigned.Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements.
  • Maintains applicable certification/licensure.
  • Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code, display of ID badge, and safety.

  • PA: Graduate of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant Program. Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies and/or applicable state licensure through the State Medical Board for certificate to practice. APRN: Graduate of an accredited APRN program. Master's degree in Nursing and/or applicable state license through the Ohio Board of Nursing for certificate to practice.


  • PA: Current certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA. Incumbent must obtain applicable State licensure before employment, license to prescribe or be eligible. Must have approved Physician Supervision Agreement (listed on State Medical Board website) and/or signed addendum to Physician Supervision Agreement.
  • Must be privileged by CCAG's Credentialing Board. Basic Life Support (BL S) Healthcare Provider required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required based upon work setting. APRN: Licensed as RN in applicable state, national certification as nurse practitioner (APRN) by nationally accredited organization, current certificate of authority/APRN license by applicable state Board of Nursing. BLS Healthcare Provider required; ACLS, PALS and additional certifications may be required based upon work setting.

Complexity of Work:

  • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Management of critically ill patients. Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated competency and the ability to perform advanced assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plan development and invasive procedures as per clinical privileges.
  • Function as trainer to other Advanced Practice Providers throughout the system.
  • Complete Special Privileging as instructed.
  • Off Hours, weekend/holidays, regular schedules, 24/7 coverage.
  • Autonomy/independence continually.
  • Intensive on the job training.
  • Call Possible.

Work Experience:

  • Depending on practice. Critical care experience is desired.

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to lift and position patients ranging in weight from 50 to 350 pounds. Ability to push/pull patients to various positions, to move/push medical equipment and supplies. Requires extensive walking, sitting and stair climbing. Ability to obtain safety precautions against blood borne pathogens by using protective gear.
