Job Description

Summary

The  position entails conducting research in the mechanisms involved in the development of bacterial antibiotic resistance.  Sing  genetic and CRISPR based DNA sequencing screens, genes involved in antibiotic resistance will be identified and the mechanism of action of these genes will be analyzed at the protein level by biochemical assays. The Research Technician will be responsible for performing experiments, recording, and analyzing data and in the preparation of all media and reagents needed to perform such experiments.  In addition, routine lab tasks related to overall lab functions such as maintaining  and organization of general lab supplies will be involved.

Job Duties

  • Prepares all growth media and  sterilization of all glassware needed for general microbiology and maintains, prepares and proper storage of biochemical reagents for general operation of molecular biology and biochemistry in the lab.
  • Performs, experiments, records and analyzes data.
  • Performs and repeats experiments on a daily basis involving  analyzing the growth rate of bacterial cultures by spectrophotometry, extracting and analyzing DNA, RNA by  PCR and gel electrophoresis, performs DNA based CRISP screens involving DNA sequencing, and performs biochemistry of  proteins identified in such screens.  
  • Bacterial strains will be constructed using P1 phage transduction, recombineering and plasmid cloning on a daily basis.  
  • Results will be recorded, analyzed by various statistical methods, and graphed using various software programs such as excel ,and Graphpad Prism. Individual will be working with a minimum of 2 researchers in the lab on a daily basis so duties will vary depending on the day.   
  • Works on DNA sequencing based screens involving operation of a sensitive Next Seq550 machine that the Herman lab currently owns but shares with numerous labs.  Individual will be trained to use the machine and be responsible for general maintenance  and organization of users of the machine.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's on chemistry or biochemistry background with practical experience in the handling of organic and inorganic chemicals, making of solutions, and performing chemical or biochemical reactions.   
  • Required to work with sensitive machinery and biochemistry.
  • Trainee with experience in handling and disposal of toxic chemicals is  needed.
