Job Description

Summary

A staff scientist position is available in the Marshall Lab in the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. The lab will study mechanisms of internal mechanosensation in health and disease. Sensory neurons that detect mechanical force are critical for a variety of physiological processes, like blood pressure regulation, digestion, and urination. We will use a wide range of techniques, including microscopy, electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and behavioral testing to identify how the peripheral and central nervous system encode mechanical cues and to understand how they impact physiology and behavior. This position is located at the main Baylor College of Medicine campus, in the Texas Medical Center in the Department of Neuroscience.

Job Duties

  • Plan, direct and carry out research experiments. •
  • Oganize, evaluate, and analyze data.
  • Will attain expertise in surgical and behavioral techniques for their own work and to support other lab members’ research.
  • Develop novel assays and learn new techniques to meet scientific goals.
  • Will write and maintain lab animal protocols and help ensure other lab members know and follow these protocols.
  • Responsible for training new lab members in research techniques.
  • Manage daily lab activities and operations. This will include collaborating with the lab technician to order supplies, receive shipments and organize supplies. 
  • Oversee the mouse colony, which will include animal husbandry, tagging, isolating mouse DNA and genotyping using PCR, and maintaining colony records.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • Three years of post doctoral research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience or a related biological science discipline
