The Carotenoids and Nutrition Lab in the Children's Nutrition Research Center focuses on how carotenoids, a class of colorful compounds in fruits and vegetables, are absorbed and metabolized, promote health, and may be utilized as biomarkers of dietary intake. Of particular interest is how human genetic variation impacts physiological responses to dietary carotenoids. 
Lab members are encouraged to engage in opportunities to advance their professional skills and scientific expertise. The ideal candidate works effectively on a team and has a zest for organization and accomplishing goals.

Job Duties

  • Recruit, schedule, and meet with human research volunteers.
  • Correspond with research volunteers about study activities.
  • Correspond with CNRC shared resource labs to complete analyses.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data.
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
  • Document results of experiments in lab notebooks and maintain appropriate electronic documentation.
  • Select, evaluate, apply, and troubleshoot techniques used in routine research.
  • Conduct laboratory assays including ELISAs.
  • Extract DNA from human specimens.
  • Conduct chemical analysis of foods and human specimens using HPLC. 
  • Order laboratory supplies and manage supply inventory. 
  • Assist in manuscript and grant preparation as needed.
  • Maintain lab safety compliance records.
  • Engage in good laboratory practices such as keeping the laboratory area clean and organized, and following appropriate safety protocols.
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Participate in the scholarship of the laboratory.
  • Assign activities to less experienced research staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Some research experience and interest in nutrition is a plus.
  • Successful candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and will be self-motivated, reliable, efficient, methodical, and show an attention to detail.
  • The candidate needs to be able to work independently and follow both oral and written instructions.
