Position Description
The laboratory of Dr. Stuart Weisberg at Columbia University Irving Medical Center focuses on the study of tissue immunity, and the role of innate and adaptive immune cells in shaping protective and pathologic tissue immune responses within specialized tissue microenvironments. We are now looking for an energetic, meticulous, and dedicated post-doctoral research scientist to participate in studies of human tissue immunity with a focus on the immune cells that reside in the human pancreas and upper gastrointestinal tract. Our research draws on collaboration with a human organ donor resource at Columbia University Medical Center as well as studies of patient samples in collaboration with surgeons at the Columbia Pancreas Center. Our lab employs techniques for the isolation of primary immune cells from the human pancreas. For analysis of immune cell antigen specificity, differentiation states, and functional profiles, the lab routinely performs primary immune cell culture, single-cell RNA sequencing, and flow cytometry. We also use automated multispectral imaging platforms for analysis of tissue immune cell density, activation states, and interaction with other immune and non-immune cells in situ. Our ongoing studies focus on defining how T cells interact with specialized antigen-presenting cells resident within human tissues, and how metabolic stressors such as obesity reshape tissue immune cell landscapes and interactions in ways that predispose to organ dysfunction and disease.

Overall, the successful candidate will join a large multi-investigator research effort and the work will afford opportunities to acquire skills that integrate cellular immunology, computational biology, and human anatomy.
