Job Description

Performs nerve conduction studies for patients. Assists with instructing other staff, residents, physicians and technicians in proper laboratory procedures. Maintains order within the laboratory. Assists with research studies as assigned.

Ideal candidates have a Bachelors degree in Exercise physiology or Exercise science.

EMG Technologist Non-Registered Responsibilities:

  • Operates the nerve conduction instrumentation; ensures proper adjustments are made for accurate recording procedures.
  • Selects nerves to be studied by reviewing request and patient history.
  • Prepares patient for EMG examination.
  • Performs miscellaneous clerical functions related to the laboratory.
  • Obtains patients' EMG reports and transmits to physicians on request; mails reports to referring physicians.
  • Maintain files on all request for reports.
  • Maintains clean linen for each patient; cleans EMG rooms and equipment.
  • Replenishes lab supplies in examination rooms.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED, Associate's Degree in an accredited END program or at least two years of college with some human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of basic physiology, anatomy and science to locate nerve locations and understand electromyograph test results.

Certifications:

  • Must obtain certification as a Registered Nerve Conduction Study Tech within two years of hire date.
  • BLS from AHA required

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

  • Completion of Cleveland Clinic six month trainee program with demonstrated skill in the basic functions of the laboratory or one (1) year past experience in a comparable EMG laboratory at another location.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Must lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to assist with positioning and transporting patients, i.e., pushing beds, carts and wheelchairs.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver equipment and motor coordination to operate equipment.
  • Requires normal or corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Senior EMG Registered Technologist Responsibilities:

Job Description Summary

Assists manager in coordinating, leading and directing nerve conduction technicians, fellows, residents and clinical students. Utilizes advanced clinical knowledge and specialized clinical skills in the area of diagnostic testing, nerve conduction studies and neuromuscular disease processes. Assists with EMG research studies. Performs maintenance functions for the laboratory. Cross trained and demonstrates advanced knowledge in Autonomic Laboratory procedure testing and Autonomic disease processes.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees registered and non-registered nerve conduction study technicians by offering day to day clinical expertise to assist with patient situations and case load challenges in the EMG and Autonomic laboratories.
  • Actively participating in teaching programs within the center and/or enterprise
  • Develops, implements and monitors ongoing process improvement activities and provides regular updates to the manager.
  • With the supervision of the manager-assists with the hiring, orientation, reviewing, scheduling, supervising and training of technician.
  • Communicates any new or updated information from administration.
  • Assists manager in monitoring statistical and financial activities and takes action to assist staff in meeting productivity and financial goals.
  • Assists manager with supply ordering and able to navigate ordering platforms
  • Assists manager with EMG and Autonomic Lab physician coverage and helps to monitors templates
  • Ability to confidently navigate schedule and procedure add on requests
  • Works with manager to align goals and vision
  • Assists manager with engagement activities
  • Responsible for educating technicians in technical modalities.
  • Communicates and collaborates with clinical support and outside vendors for proper machine performance and updates
  • SOP writing and collaboration with manager and lab director
  • Performs all duties of a Registered/Certified Nerve Conduction Study Technologists
  • All other duties assigned

Education:

  • Expert knowledge of neuroanatomy, physiology, neuromuscular and autonomic disease processes to assist with the interpretation of test results and training.
  • Knowledge of all NCS/EMG and Autonomic techniques to perform, assist in research, demonstrations and evaluate procedures.
  • High School Diploma or GED, Associate's Degree in an accredited END program or minimum of two years of college with some human anatomy and physiology.

Languages:

  • English

Certifications:

  • Registered or Certified through The American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET).
  • BLS from AHA required.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to mentor other employees in order to develop and grow their skills sets.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment
  • Ability to navigate Microsoft Office, Email/Calendar invites, Virtual meetings

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience as a registered/certified EMG technologist at Cleveland Clinic or a comparable laboratory.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in nerve conduction/EMG and Autonomic techniques, theories and practices sufficient to assist diagnosis of patients and train others.
  • The ability to navigate a multi-specialized neurophysiology lab environment and the ability to communicate across different departments as well as electronic platforms

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to assist with positioning and transporting patients, i.e., pushing beds, carts and wheelchairs.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver equipment and motor coordination to operate equipment.

  • High degree of manual dexterity to produce materials on PC
