Position Description

Position open for a Senior Bioinformatician in the Department of Immunology at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Research laboratories in the Department, world leaders in their area, investigate the genes, molecules and cells used by the immune system to defend against microbes, tumors or autoimmune diseases. This research involves high-throughput genomics (gene expression, single-cell genomics, microbe metagenomics) and cutting-edge imaging. The Bioinformatician supports this research, ensuring that computational solutions exist to Department needs.

Main responsibilities include:
Scoping and deploying needed software tools;
Training department investigators in software use, both in formal classes or in one-on-one guidance during data analysis;
Working collaboratively with department investigators on specific projects for data analysis or visualization;
Development of data processing pipelines;
Organizing small seminar series or discussion groups;
Enhancing general computational know-how within the department.
The position is highly integrated in the Computational Biology ecosystem on the Longwood campus. The Bioinformatician serves as a liaison between the Department of Immunology and Research-IT at HMS, Bioinformatics Cores, the Center for Computational Biomedicine and other training programs, and IT structure at HMS, in particular for access to the high-performance computing and data storage facilities available at HMS.

Basic Qualifications

Master’s Degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related field.
3 years of experience with computational biology or biomedical software support in academia or industry.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Strong experience with R, Python, or MATLAB, or like bio statistical tool, and familiarity with Linux. Experience with and knowledge of either Genomics computation tools (NGS data processing, sequence analysis, single-cell profiling), AI/ML approaches (CNN), web visualization tools (HTML5, Javascript, R-Shiny), cloud applications, or database design (SQL) would be a plus.

Additional Information

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT).
