Job Description

Position Highlights

A registered pharmacy technician is someone other than a licensed pharmacist or pharmacy intern that performs pharmacy tasks and duties as delegated by a licensed pharmacist that do not fall within the purview of Florida Statue 465.003(13). All such delegated acts will be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist who is responsible for all such acts performed by persons under his or her supervision as outlined in Florida Statue 465.014. These supervised tasks and duties include but are not limited to: initiating or receiving communications with patient provider team members to facilitate patient care for: refill authorization requests, assisting in patient appointment review, medical records review, insurance authorization review, processing of prescriptions, including investigational medications utilized in clinical trials in compliance with policies and procedures set forth by the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and/or medications associated with Risk Evaluation Mitigation Strategies (REMS) . Registered Pharmacy technician may also perform assistance in the compounding , preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical and investigational preparations following USP standards and hospital policy, inventory stewardship, keeping records and making reports required by law, and processing of documents required by the hospital.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Have an Associate Degree; High School Diploma/GED required
  • Have graduated from an accredited Pharmacy Technician training program or have experience that qualifies them for licensure as outlined in Florida Statutes, Section 465.014. – required
  • Be a Registered Pharmacy Technician, required
  • Have 2 years outside experience (or 1 year experience at Moffitt) as a Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT)
  • Have 2 years outside experience (or 1 year experience at Moffitt) with unit dose, pharmacy orders and inventory computer systems; and/or investigational or REMS medication management, required
  • Have 2 years outside experience (or 1 year experience at Moffitt) with Pharmacy Automation software systems, equipment and electronic health records (EHR) systems, required
  • Have 2 years outside experience (or 1 year experience at Moffitt) with preparation of sterile intravenous medications which may include hazardous and/or investigational medications used for the treatment of cancer with competent understanding of current USP clean room practices and GCP guidelines - And/Or - 2+ yrs experience with inventory management of investigational/controlled/specialty medications, required
  • Have a Hazardous Drug Management Certificate, preferred
  • Be a Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT), preferred

Responsibilities (not a complete list)

  • Medication Order Processing and Medication Record Review: Be able to transcribe medication orders into computerize medical record system ensuring all information is complete such as age, weight, height, sex, medical condition, medication history, and allergy profile as required by protocol and policy. Be able to fully process prescriptions and new orders for checking by a pharmacist. Ensure entry accuracy does not vary more than 2% from the established ongoing department error rate and that orders are entered by established department priority to ensure timely processing of orders and minimize lost charges or wasted medication preparations.
  • Fulfilling Medication Orders: Fills medication orders in the proper order of priority, accurately counted, with neat and accurate labels affixed to the preparation. Proper procedures and documentation in inventory management systems are used during the fulfillment of the medication order.
  • Non-sterile and sterile compounding of both non-hazardous and hazardous medications: Prepares parenteral dosage forms utilizing aseptic techniques in accordance with departmental policies, standards set forth in current USP, state & federal regulations and GCP guidelines for investigational medications. Meets all standards for quality assurance and maintains department certification in all aspects of IV admixture, including accurate calculations, manipulation techniques, labeling, safety , storage, and distribution. Coordinates work to maximize work efficiency and minimize waste by utilizing batching techniques
     
  • Delivery of Medications: Prepares and delivers medication ensuring proper storage location requirements are met based on the stability needs of the product. Maintains appropriate medication inventory levels and rotation of stock in automated dispensing units and other medication storage areas per daily report needs and maintains all necessary records
  • Quality Assurance: Performs routine quality assurance tasks, including checking extemporaneously manufactured medications, commercially available medications, I.V. solutions and equipment for expiration dates, recalls, or signs of deterioration
     
  • Inventory Management: Receives medications and supplies in accordance with inventory control, purchasing policies and/or per clinical trial requirements for investigational medications. May serve as back-up to medication purchasing agent to order medications or supplies as needed if purchasing agent out of office or as needed for urgent patient care.Maintains all medication and supply inventory levels within the predetermined stocking level, calling attention to needs for revision, or perpetual supply problems.
     
  • Regulatory Documentation Compliance: Documentation of daily regulatory monitoring parameters for clean room operation, including facilities temperature monitoring and facilitating follow-up of any out of range parameters. Documentation review and preparation for clinical trial audits and sponsor monitor visits. Ensure REMS prescription documentation/compliance as required.
     
  • Orientation /Training: Help support department and area training by allowing new technicians, pharmacists, students and other department and non-department staff to shadow/train during work shift

Credentials & Qualifications
