Principal Investigator, James Turkson, PhD is looking for a Postdoctoral Scientist to join the team!

The postdoctoral research fellow position will contribute to the National Cancer Institute funded drug discovery project on the targeting STAT3. This is a regular, full-time, position at the Cedars-Sinai Cancer, Cancer Biology Program, located in Los Angeles, CA. The postdoctoral scientist will contribute leadership and effort toward the three specific aims of this project. With guidance of the Principal Investigator the postdoctoral research scientist will be expected to lead the assigned basic research project in the laboratory ultimately generating peer-reviewed publications with the goal of contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer. This position will also entail responsibilities related to laboratory operations including ordering supplies as necessary, maintenance of equipment, maintenance of records, attendance of weekly lab meetings (including weekly progress report). Productivity will be primarily measured by publication.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for developing and conducting research studies in a Drug Discovery / Experimental Therapeutics and Molecular Biology Research Lab, including designing assays, and performing experimental and screening of natural products and small-molecules against validated targets, and biological, and biochemical processes. Conducts biomedical research experiments on drug-target interactions, protein purification and preparation, and assay design and drug screening, analyzes experimental results, writes manuscripts and grant proposals, and presents research data in scientific conferences.

Interacts with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, and graduate/undergraduate students to conduct research activities. Act as a senior member of the laboratory and provides assistance in training students. Trains laboratory personnel in experimentation techniques. Contributes ideas and participates in the discovery research and brings new energy to the discovery efforts. Supports and works with medicinal chemist researchers in the lab. Demonstrated ability to take initiatives, interest in scientific work, and adaptability.

Participates in laboratory organization. Interacts with supporting staff, fiscal offices, Cancer Center administrative offices, and the Environmental Health and Safety Office. Interacts with vendors in regard to lab purchases. Participates in developing standard operation procedures, ordering and managing reagents, consumables and disposables required by research projects, keeping proper inventory/records of experimental results, and working closely with investigators, supporting staff and administrative personnel to address needs required for research activities and to be compliant with the institutional requirements. Oversees the maintenance of bio-safety records and inventories in the lab as mandated by the institution.

Requirements:

  • Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) or equivalent doctorate within previous three years
  • Experience: 2+ years in drug discovery research, natural products studies, in vivo antitumor studies, mouse work, molecular biology, tumor cell biology studies, with emphasis on signal transduction, microbiology, and protein purification and production.
  • Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of data analysis of compound screening, cell and molecular biology and/or biochemistry, recombinant protein production and purification, in vivo animal models of tumors and antitumor efficacy, mass spectrometry and proteomics, and BIACORE or related technology application. Knowledge of basic laboratory management, data storage.
  • Abilities and Skills: Skills in biomedical research techniques. Must be able to perform routine as well as complex laboratory experiments required for proof-of-concept studies. Possesses a high level of technological proficiency. Ability to use scientific equipment including laminar flow hood, centrifuge, PCR machines, and High Throughput System systems. Good communication skills.
