As part of the University of Oklahoma's Marketing and Communications Division, the Communications Specialist supports all communications efforts, serving as a staff writer tasked with crafting messages for internal and external audiences and managing communications projects for the division. In addition, the Communications Specialist provides assistance with university marketing, media relations, events, and digital communications.



Essential Duties:




  • Helps develop and implement internal and external communications such as newsletters, news releases, university announcements, and marketing publications.

  • Serves as content curator and assistant editor of internal news publication.

  • Serves as a staff writer: Develops, writes, and edits a variety of content and stories for web and print.

  • Develops talking points, speeches, scripts, and background materials for the Office of the President.

  • Writes, edits, and proofs brochures, newsletters, ads, proposals, presentations, whitepapers, and other publications while maintaining consistency with university brand standards.

  • Performs research, analyzes data, and assists with development and implementation of strategic initiatives for the division’s communications, marketing, and media efforts.

  • As needed, supports OU colleges, departments, programs, and administrative offices with the creation and editing of content, including talking points, feature stories, news releases, etc.

  • Monitors official university email accounts and provides timely responses

  • Assists with content creation and online posting to OU website and social media channels.

  • Reviews publications submitted by colleges and departments to ensure all publications are consistent with OU guidelines, style requirements, and message tone.

  • Oversees interns, PEAK workers, and/or Graduate Assistants.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


 

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor Degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, Communications, or related field



Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.



Skills:




  • Must be proficient in Associated Press style

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite

  • Must have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, including working with a diverse group of faculty, staff and members of the public

  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment

  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines with exceptional attention to detail skills

  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines and make procedural decisions and judgments



Certifications:




  • Valid Drivers License required for regular event support.



Advertised Physical Requirements:




  • Standard adminstrative office environment and exposure, including frequent keyboardding. This position requires mobility, such as being able to move between floors or between buildings on compus. Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods. Must be able to communicate effectively. 



Supervision: 1-5 Staff. Oversees interns, PEAK workers, and Graduate Assistants.
