Job Description Summary:
The Financial Aid Advisor in the Student Financial Aid Office is a member of a team that provides financial assistance to students attending KUMC. This position is critical to the office, assisting with daily processing of financial aid files to ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal policies. Specific to this position is the processing of the loan programs at KUMC. This position also works with the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy requirements for KUMC students.

Job Duties:
Manage the loan programs, including federal, private, and institutional loans. This includes daily work to ensure compliance for funds in excess of $32 million. Supervise all transactions with loan processing, which includes reconciling, accounting, resolving problems, and canceling loan funds when necessary. Verify loan files for compliance with federal and institutional regulations and accuracy of the disbursements.
Manage all loan counseling, including but not limited to entrance and exit counseling for federal loan. Ensure that information provided from KUMC regarding loans is current and accurate.
Manage the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements at KUMC. Monitoring students’ GPA and completion rates to ensure students are meeting the requirements necessary to receive aid. Work with students who are not meeting the SAP requirements in order to assist with the appeal process, including and scheduling and participating in the Student Financial Aid Advisory Committee meetings.
Manage and work up various reports based on data from the federal government and KUMC systems to ensure accuracy and compliance with institutional, state, and federal financial aid programs. Reports include, but are not limited to information regarding enrollment status, aid eligibility, student budgets, and financial aid packaging.
Answer calls, address emails, meet with, and advise students on financial aid policy, procedures and programs. Counsel students regarding the differences in financial aid programs and determine which is best for the student with regards to interest rates and repayment expectations.
Serve as member of Student Financial Aid team for initial review of professional judgment requests from students needing additional assistance for special circumstances.
Assist with manual packaging, including summer awarding and late awarding funds additional funds are available.
Oversee default management efforts. Responsible for working with reports received from the federal government identifying borrowers in jeopardy of entering default, to ensure that students failing to make appropriate payments are notified and assisted to prevent becoming default on federal loans.
Serve as the federal loan ombudsman for KUMC. Serve as the primary contact with the Dept. of Education for resolving issues and disputes with borrowers.
Serve on various department, division, institution, and State organization committees.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in related field with at least two years’ experience. Equivalent office experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year for year basis. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Student Financial Aid Office. Experience using PeopleSoft Student Administration system. Experience working in higher education.
