Job Description

Demonstrating teaching excellence by instructing students in Pastry Arts courses in accordance with college policies and procedures. This tenure track Instructor – Pastry Arts position will begin in August 2023.  

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Associate degree in Baking and Pastry Arts from a Regionally Accredited College or University WITH five years of professional hands-on experience in the Baking and Pastry Arts field OR Associate degree in Culinary Arts from a Regionally Accredited College or University WITH seven years of professional hands-on experience in the Baking and Pastry Arts field  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a related field  

  • High skill level or expertise in various areas of Baking and Pastry Arts disciplines  

  • Experience as a Pastry Chef/Assistant Pastry Chef in a Bakeshop  

  • Previous practical teaching experience  

  • Experience with Learning Management System, preferably Canvas  

  • Ability to design new courses for traditional in-person delivery or hybrid classes.  

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching – passion for the subject matter and teaching to diverse, domestic, and international students.  

  • Baking and Pastry Production experience and experience in training of students and/or employees  

  • Strong organizational and time management skills as well as work ethic and teamwork  

  • ServSafe Certification  

  • Knowledgeable in word, excel and power point applications.  

The duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Develop, prepare, review and revise pastry arts course syllabi and course assignments and tests for classes that may be taught on-ground or hybrid.  

  • Prepare and execute daily lesson plans for pastry arts classes.   

  • Supervise and provide excellent instruction to students in various pastry arts classes to yield high quality results and attention to detail.  

  • Requisition all ingredients and equipment for all hands-on classes.  

  • Provides learning activities that stimulate student involvement and encourage critical thinking.  

  • Enforce sanitation, hygiene, uniform, and attendance policies.  

  • Evaluate student performance, maintain student grades, and give objective feedback in a timely manner based on established methods and criteria.  

  • Responsible to ensure students leave kitchens clean and in proper order.  

  • Maintains regular office hours to assist students; responds to students' emails and voicemails in a timely fashion; performs an accurate assessment of student performance.  

  • Maintains professional competencies in the subject area and currency in instructional methodologies through professional associations and professional development.  

  • May perform other related tasks as assigned by the Program Director, Department Chair, Dean, and/or Academic Vice President.  

  • Works with Director to provide internship opportunities paid/unpaid for students and serves as a mentor to students.  

  • Participates in extracurricular activities related to program areas including, but not limited to student clubs, groups, recognition, and award programs.  

  • Serves on college-wide and departmental committees as needed.  

  • Assignments may have the possibility of day, evening, and/or weekend classes.  

  • Attend faculty, department, and divisional meetings. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Work is routinely performed in a bakeshop or classroom. 

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.  

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.  

Starting Salary Range  

Initial salary placement is based on educational level and total years of full-time equivalent teaching experience. For example, for an instructor with a Master’s degree the salary range would be $46,691 to $59,768 annually. The entire salary range is up to $71,723 annually with a Doctorate and 10 years’ experience. A maximum of 10 years of experience will be considered for the initial salary placement purposes. *
