Staff Scientist 1

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking applications from highly motivated individuals to serve as a Staff Scientist in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD) in Bethesda, MD. CARD is a collaborative initiative between the NIA and National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) that supports basic, translational, and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD). CARD’s central mission is to initiate, stimulate, accelerate, and support research that will lead to the development of improved treatments and prevention for these diseases.

CARD is seeking to recruit an expert in third generation sequencing technologies, including specifically the Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing systems. The successful candidate will have expertise in the generation, processing, and analysis of large scale third generation sequencing data from this platform. The successful candidate should be committed to scientific excellence and highly collaborative research and will foster this throughout the development of a group focused on third-generation sequencing methods.

The successful individual must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Genomics, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields, with at least 5 years of experience working in a laboratory setting. The successful candidate will have had a productive postdoctoral experience as evidenced by a record of primary and collaborative authorships in peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized journals. The individual should be an expert in the application and/or development of third-generation sequencing methods using DNA and/or RNA from human blood, cells, and tissue. Experience in neurodegenerative disease research and the generation, quality control, handling, and analysis of large-scale sequencing data is essential. The successful candidate will assist in the management of projects and collaborations through project initiation, strategy development, strategic planning, execution, and closeout of phases of projects. The incumbent will be involved in problem-solving and decision making to ensure the completion of multiple projects, goals, and competing priorities. The incumbent will also have a role in assisting the CARD Director in project prioritization, and in identifying research and development opportunities that fit within the program and mission of CARD. A proven track record in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships as well as mentoring is highly desirable.

Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Laboratory. Although this Staff Scientist will be supervised by the CARD Director, he/she will be interacting with the scientists from the IRP and scientific community at large. The successful candidate will have experience in collaborative research documented in publications and more generally will have a history of publications that reflect experience in the analytical requirements of this position.

CARD is a highly collaborative research center that aims to be a central hub for collaboration and cooperation. The science performed in CARD is collaborative and team-based in nature and there will be a large number of scientists and research groups working with or at CARD with varied expertise and from around the world. In the initial phase, CARD is focused on understanding biology, anchored in genetics; prediction and prognosis of disease; de-risking targets; and precision therapeutics.

Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health and life insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available. All employees of the Federal Government are subject to the conflict-of-interest statutes and regulations, including the Standards of Ethical Conduct.
