Summary

The Lead, Program Management of the Student Opportunities for Advancement in Research (SOAR) Office will direct, implement, assess, and improve programs for student research within the School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Most of the duties of the position require a close working relationship with other leaders in Education. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences with a dotted line report to the Dean of the School of Medicine.

 

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences along with the School of Medicine has established the Office of Student Opportunities for Advancement in Research (SOAR). The purpose of the SOAR Office is to educate and support all BCM medical students interested in pursuing research opportunities offered at Baylor College of Medicine and its affiliates.

 

This position may be eligible to work a hybrid work arrangement after an onboarding and training period.

Job Duties

  • Primarily responsible for program development and direction of successful, high-quality educational experiences for student research program participants.
  • Develop cross-disciplinary enrichment programs, in coordination with other stakeholders across the College, that facilitate vertical mentoring, research skills, knowledge of basic and translational research, and career development for students.
  • Develop, plan, organize, and deliver program information and training sessions, in coordination with other stakeholders across the College, to enhance student research skills.
  • Organize and participate in facilitated seminars and discussions to support student research.
  • Liaise and build relationships with departments and other entities to promote program engagement.
  • Identify, disseminate, and advise students about local and national research opportunities.
  • Track and assess program outcomes; present program outcomes to stakeholders and engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives based on outcomes annually at a minimum.
  • Develop research opportunities for students based on area of research interest and type of research.
  • Manage research opportunities database for medical students seeking independent basic, translational, and clinical research experiences.
  • Serve as a knowledge resource for research opportunities for students, including potential grant opportunities.
  • Fiscal oversight and responsible stewardship of student research resources.
  • Administer the SOAR Travel Award program.
  • Communicate with faculty across BCM and affiliated hospitals, including the Temple campus, with regard to the opportunity to have medical students participate in research projects.
  • Perform regular updating of inventory to identify new opportunities and remove stale entries. Plan and Oversee Student Research Forums.
  • Plan and host events for research presentations such as the Henry JN Taub & James K Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium.
  • Oversee logistical details: speakers, marketing, facility arrangement, and reception.
  • Manage abstract submission.
  • Recruit faculty and staff facilitators Manage Student Research Presentation Awards.
  • Administer award program providing funding support for medical students to present research at professional meetings each year.
  • Establish award criteria, policies, and procedures, ensuring accordance with BCM travel and educational policies.
  • Review and authorize funding awards.
  • Seek additional financial support for programs through grants and philanthropy.
  • Demonstrate responsible stewardship of resources.
  • Explore opportunities for additional federal training grants and work with faculty and staff to prepare successful training grant proposals.
  • Develop communication and marketing materials that may help support future philanthropy as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree with a significant research component
  • Ph.D. with postdoctoral experience in clinical or translational research and teaching
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in basic science, clinical, translational, or population health research
  • Experience with research grants, organizing grant reviews, and award programs
  • Track record of research publications and presentations
  • Experience teaching research skills
