Job Description

Summary

The Premedical Summer Institute (PSI) Resident/Program Assistants (RAs) are an integral part of the PSI coordinating team. An assistant will be selected to help with the day-to-day coordination of program activities, oversee the safety and well-being of program participants in the residence hall, and provide advising and mentoring regarding premedical studies and medical school admissions. Responsibilities and functions of the RAs are detailed below. Job includes evening and weekend hours.

Job Duties

  • Lives in residence hall for duration of program (May 29 – June 30). Housing will be provided free of charge.  
  • RAs will have single rooms. RAs are encouraged to interact with students in the evenings to serve as mentors/counselors. One RA must be on duty (i.e., present at the residence hall) each night to handle emergencies and problems, including lockouts, health and safety issues, and others. 
  • Acts as liaisons with Rice University housing office, police, information technology, and food service. RAs will be the first point of contact with students regarding room maintenance, internet connections, phone, parking and health/safety issues. 
  • Acts as liaisons between students and program office to provide feedback on student needs, problems, concerns and other issues that may arise during the program. 
  • Attends PSI activities and lectures, including anatomy and physiology lectures and labs and some evening/weekends. activities (may be distributed on rotating basis among RAs). RAs will help set up for lectures and activities, assist with audio-visual set-up, monitor attendance, make announcements, distribute handouts, and assist in coordinating outings and events. 
  • Monitors dinner attendance at residence hall Monday through Friday. RAs will receive free weekday dinners at Rice University and any additional meals provided through the program. They are encouraged to use these times to interact with students. 
  • Provides office support throughout the program, including creating flyers and forms, copying handouts, compiling program information packets, entering data, running errands, distributing materials and stipends to students, and communicating with students, faculty, and others via e-mail, phone, and fax.
  • Assists in planning and organization of program including events, field trips, social and sports activities, and other special sessions that arise

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a High School or College Student (undergraduate or graduate).
  • No experience required.
