The Academic Advisor will play an integral role in ensuring that the ChE undergraduate program is aligned with the VT motto, "UT Prosim," 'That I May Serve' by participating in innovative student success initiatives, helping to streamline advising workflows and, developing processes to further improve student services and enhance departmental support for individual student needs. This position will frequently interact with students, faculty, and staff by acting as the primary point of contact for undergraduate academic advising for a diverse population of students. Primary responsibilities also include coordinating outreach activities focused on recruiting and interaction with industrial recruiters. It is essential to the job to possess the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with a strong work ethic, exceptional customer service orientation, and ability to excel in a team environment. The successfully selected candidate will have strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a highly professional manner with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree in engineering, educational administration, student development, or related field from an accredited university.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively with a diverse population, with sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.
- Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Excellent organizational skills. Detail oriented person with demonstrated ability to multitask, tracking and completing varied tasks effectively over an extended period of time.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience learning and working in a dynamic environment individually and as a part of a team.
- Ability to interact with industrial recruiters in a professional manner.
- Ability to comprehend and communicate technical careers in Chemical Engineering.
- Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, and spreadsheets.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working with students and supervising, leading and/or planning student-focused activities/events in a higher educational setting.
- Previous professional student-focused experience in a higher education setting (e.g. academic advising, career advising, student affairs, etc.) and/or experience in academic advising in a technical field in a university setting
- Experience in and/or knowledge pertaining to university operations, policies, and procedures in areas such as registration, class scheduling, degree and graduation requirements.
- Working knowledge of academic advising pillars, competencies, and standards.
- Knowledge of mechanisms of student retention, student development theories, career development strategies, and recruitment strategies.
- Experience with Canvas, Navigate and Banner applications.
