Job Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences is seeking an IT Systems Specialist . This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The Information Technology (IT) Systems Specialist serves as a member of the core team of scientists and students studying the Earth as an integrated system through an interdisciplinary approach and state-of-the-art technology and facilities, field experiments, theoretical investigations, numerical modeling and simulations. The IT Systems Specialist has specialized Information Technology knowledge to make recommendations for the course of action in the College. This position conducts research on new and emerging technologies and their application to Earth System Science. Through management of research and instructional computing for the College, the IT Systems Specialist assists faculty, staff and students in the quest for scientific understanding of the Earth’s systems, environmental challenges, the study coastal zones, and ocean and atmosphere processes and interactions.

Key Responsibilities
50%: Manage instructional computing. Manage computer research and educational classrooms and auxiliary laboratories. Develop future computer facilities. Purchase and maintain hardware, software, and licensing for research and educational computing. Manage student accounts. Maintain file/storage services. Manage budgets for new technologies. Perform system administration tasks for the multimedia research and educational classrooms. Manage and maintain plotters and print servers. Propose and implement policies and procedures ensuring efficient laboratory operations and quality service. Make decisions regarding technical and physical changes to the laboratories and research facilities. Maintain supplies and working order of research laboratory equipment. Manage and perform software installations, diagnostics, updates, and repairs. Propose and implement new technology for improved research laboratory resources. Maintain research and instructional laboratory reservations. Maintain the audio-visual equipment. Write technical documentation for software and hardware.

Hire and supervise undergraduate and graduate student laboratory monitors as needed. Provide leadership, supervision and direction for assigned staff; hire and train employees; plan, assign and review work; establish goals; conduct evaluations; and respond to grievances.

30%: Conduct research on new and emerging technologies and their application to Earth System Science. Conduct research related to the investigation of Geomatics and geospatial networking technologies. Plan, develop, and maintain information systems and operation. Analyze tools and techniques for research and educational use in land surveying, remote sensing, cartography, geographic information systems, global navigation satellite systems, geography, and global access to geographic information. Publish report of findings and analyses of earth mapping and networking for collaboration and coordination of geographical data and references. Contribute to the study of the Earth as an integrated system through continued investigation of state-of-the-art technology and computing facilities; and remain current on advances and trends in technologies applicable to research and instruction. Manage instructional computing to assist faculty, staff and students in laboratory, classroom, and field environments. Analyze and consult with faculty providing a bridge between computing needs and innovations for research and education. Develop and implement computer models and/or methodology for research/teaching/collection; and maintain accurate records of experiments and information collected. Publish results and provide conclusions based on analyses.

20%: Make presentations to faculty and students on new technologies and computing methods. Liaise with the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), ensuring compliance with CEOAS and Oregon State University (OSU) standards. Contribute to the production of student publications and manuscripts. Assist with the preparation of reports and data analyses to be presented at regional, national and international associations, and in peer-reviewed publications. Develop new ideas and methods to assist the dissemination of research results. Provide instructional computer support for students, faculty, and staff in Wilkinson Hall. Assist students, faculty, and staff users regarding the use of supported software applications and hardware.
What You Will Need
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Science, or related field.
Five or more years of experience supporting research computing.
Demonstrated knowledge of GIS research and ability to work with and manage research data.
Familiarity with industry trends, such as cloud-based services and related technologies.
Experience in computer systems administration including Active Directory environment, Windows servers, group policy management, and Windows workstations.
Experience writing and maintaining documentation for IT processes, for both technical staff and external users.
Excellent verbal and written communication, and presentation skills.
Experience tracking/coordinating/overseeing a wide range of ongoing projects.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
Master of Science (MS) degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Science or related field.
Ten or more years of professional experience supporting research computing.
Experience providing guidance and planning for future acquisitions to support the research/educational computer systems in laboratory and classroom environments.
Experience maintaining research/educational laboratory computer and related electronic equipment.
Experience with mixed platform operating systems in a scientific or educational environment, including Mac and Linux systems.
Experience building and maintaining computer lab environments, including building the OS image and maintaining the deployment server.
Experience using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).
Experience building and maintaining a server backup system.
Proficiency with at least one scripting language (e.g., Perl, PowerShell, Ruby, Python, VBScript ).
Experience with database management systems (e.g., SQL, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL).
Experience installing, managing, and updating server-based license managers (e.g., FlexNet used by MATLAB, ENVI, Sasafras).
