CSIRO’s Environment Business Unit brings together our capabilities in marine, atmospheric, water and terrestrial environment disciplines, as well as significant social and economic research, to align and support the nation in creating a better and more sustainable future.

The Environmental Indicators research team is seeking a Research Scientist - Environmental Health Indicators to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO’s strategies. 
 

As Research Scientist - Environmental Health Indicators you will make independent and collaborative contributions to the development of new ideas in the area of environmental assessment and management, through the development of environmental health indicators and models.

Your duties will include:

•    Contribute to the development of environmental bioindicators and the development of models to explain environmental health trajectories.
•    Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
•    Under the supervision of more senior researchers, assist in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation. 
•    Apply discretion to decide and implement strategies appropriate to the successful completion of work.
•    Present results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients and/or write scientific papers for publication.  
•    Undertake experimental and/or observational research activities and supervise/train others to ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design.

 

Location: Hobart (TAS) preferred. Other locations may be considered.
Salary: AU$105,806 – AU$114,500 (pro-rata for part-time) + up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified Term until June 30, 2025.  Full-time.

To be considered you will need:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

 

Essential
•    A PhD in a relevant field, such as ecological modelling, environmental genomics.  
•    Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
•    High-level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally to a broad range of audiences, including non-experts.
•    Knowledge of and experience with machine learning/AI in ecological modelling.
•    Knowledge of ecological data types, including DNA-based data.
•    Familiarity with concepts of environmental health indicators and their application.

 

Desirable
•    Experience and interest in metagenomic methods in environmental health assessment.
•    Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
