ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:


The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest and most complex Department in the Morsani College of Medicine with over 26 Divisions, Programs and Centers/Institutes, total human resources in excess of 1,000, and an annual all-source budget in excess of $143,000,000. The Department's ongoing growth includes the restructure of Cardiovascular Sciences from a separate Department to a Division, support of the microbiome initiative, and the execution of clinical, research and education initiatives focused on COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases.

The mission of the Department is to rank among the elite in the nation in the areas of education, research and patient care. The Department provides education and training for a diverse group of medical students, residents, fellows and health personnel from USF and throughout the world.

The Department's research activities are numerous and involve both basic and clinical research activities in all subspecialties of Internal Medicine. Our NIH funding is in excess of $120 million over the past 3 years. Patient care occurs in our affiliated hospitals (including Tampa General Hospital, H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, James A Haley VA Hospital, Florida Hospital) as well as our state-of-the-art ambulatory health care centers. The Department also provides healthcare support and services via contractual arrangements with many diverse organizations. The US News & World Report recent rankings of our subspecialties include Nephrology at 18, and Gastroenterology at 24 and Primary Care at 67.

The Department's faculty represent a group of dedicated physicians that are well-recognized as leaders in all three mission areas.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Clinical Business Analyst is a key resource for department management, faculty and staff with respect to optimizing operational, financial and patient care quality outcomes. As such, the Clinical Business Analyst provides a wide array of guidance to all Internal Medicine Management (Chairman, Vice Chairs, Chief Administrative Officers, Division Chiefs), clinical faculty, clinical operations team, research operations team, etc. This position provides analytical billing and coding expertise to evaluate, report, review and develop action plans to optimize operational, financial, quality and productivity performance for the Department of Internal Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Data Analysis: Evaluate clinic data, division, providers and support, to optimize profit, effectiveness and quality. Complete audits of individual provider billings and collections, clinic operation workflows, etc. Execute audit action plans as needed; this includes setting meetings, training, actions to address audit findings, follow-up, etc.

Reporting: Assemble, verify, audit and compile data/reports on clinic operations, provider productivity and effectiveness, quality control, etc. to optimize clinic operation proficiency, patient satisfaction, provider and support quality and financial results. Develop and prepare reports for department leadership and management, division directors, and faculty on clinic operations, provider productivity, support productivity, quality, etc. Complete audit reports, including executive summaries and detail reports. Complete monthly financial reports.

Compliance: Set standard meetings to present data/reports to department leadership and division directors, including recommended actions for financial, operational and quality improvements. Set meetings, as needed, with individual faculty to present data/reports and recommend actions. Act as key liaison with RCO for revenue optimization. Maintain expertise with national health care trends, group practice behavior, managed care and physician payment reform as well as CPT and ICD_10 coding strategies. Maintain proficiency with all clinic operations, financial, risk and quality systems; including EPIC, FPSC (Faculty Practice Solutions Center), Cognos, CODA, Budget Plus, Press Ganey, Qlik, etc.

Finance and Accounting: Complete reviews and analysis of financial data and prepare reports monthly (for presentation at division director meetings); quarterly (executive summary/department performance/department management); semi-annually (mid-year review) and annually (budget; year-end review; annual report). Complete sections of budgets and projections for annual budget process, including individual provider billing and collection calculations, contract details, auxiliary account details, etc.

Research Informatics: Under the direction of the Associate Director, works with investigators needing device-base data acquisition on clinical studies, drafts software requirements for selection or development of devices for studies and works with the Epic team for those few cases needing integration in local care settings. Assists investigators, study teams and research infrastructure teams on research data standards selection and implementation. Contributes to a team with the goal of helping investigators identify the best methods for data collection and processing for studies.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training and two years of IT or clinical systems related work experience, OR a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and three (3) years of IT or clinical systems related work experience. OR a combination of six (6) years of IT or clinical systems related work experience. At least two (2) years of work experience must involve design, development, or implementation of clinical systems. Appropriate college coursework, technical training, or industry certifications may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Preparation for a relevant IT certification, validated through certification requirements and documentation of completion, is considered to be related training.

PREFERRED:

Master's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting , Information Systems, Data Analytics, Computer Science or other directly related field of study. Strong knowledge of third party regulations relating to physician billing. Two years CPT-4 HCPCS and ICD-10 coding conventions. Must demonstrate strong analytical, oral and written communication, multi-task, problem-solving, interpersonal and time management skills.

SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
Two (2) Years experience in EPIC. Experience in Revenue Cycle Operations. Advanced level use of Microsoft Excel.
