We are seeking a Scientist who will work within a multidisciplinary team to design and implement innovative research to improve the profitability and resilience of Australian farming enterprises. 
The successful candidate will be passionate about delivering impact to industry and have discipline expertise in pasture production, agronomy, forage conservation, ruminant production and/or farming systems analysis. 

 

The role is linked to a national project that seeks to identify and quantify novel opportunities to transform feed supply and fill key livestock nutrient gaps within mixed farming systems. Experiments will utilise combinations of on-farm, glasshouse, animal house and laboratory approaches, and encompass annual legume production, forage conservation, crop grazing and use of drought tolerant native shrubs.
 

The Research Scientist will have the opportunity to pursue new ideas and approaches across a range of disciplines, build networks across industry and develop their research, communication and project leadership skills. 
 

Your duties will include:

  • Assist Team and Project Leaders to design and implement novel field-based research to develop opportunities to transform feed supply, fill nutrient gaps and increase resilience in the mixed farming zones of southern Australia. 

  • Communicate findings through reports, leading academic journals, seminars and conferences, media and industry field days.

  • Work harmoniously within a multidisciplinary team of scientists, technicians and students.  Maintain professional and productive relationships with teams from CSIRO and other research agencies, host farmers and industry. 

  • Help build CSIRO’s research reputation in the fields of feedbase improvement and analysis of the production and environmental dimensions of livestock production within mixed farming enterprises. 

  • Other duties as directed.

 

 

Location: Perth, WA

Salary: AU$105k - AU$114k per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as agriculture, plant or livestock science.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively within a multidisciplinary research team of scientists and technicians to design experiments, plan complex field, glasshouse and/or animal house data collection, collate and analyse data, draft reports and communicate project outcomes to collaborators, farmers and industry.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, research reports and grant applications.
  • Strong ability to communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with colleagues, other researchers, clients and industry in the interests of great science outcomes, inclusive collaboration and the enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation. 
  • A current driver’s licence and willingness to undertake on-farm research in regional areas of Western Australia and attend meetings interstate.
  • Other duties as directed.

 

Desirable

  • A good understanding of the role of livestock production within mixed farming systems and synergies between livestock and crop systems.
  • Experience in pasture and forage agronomy, management of on-farm research trials and/or livestock handling. 
  • Skills in economic and/or systems modelling.
