What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a postdoctoral appointee to join our team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop the technical basis to support risk-informed evaluations of an array of advanced reactor technologies and control system test bed designs contributing to a key national priority to restore U.S. leadership in nuclear energy technology innovation
  • Assist in the development of nuclear severe accident and radioactive transport models.
  • Perform research in various risk related technologies including traditional probabilistic risk assessment, dynamic probabilistic risk assessment, Bayesian statistics, and other risk related work;
  • Have an understanding of the risk basis for nuclear systems including nuclear reactors, radiation facilities, and other nuclear enterprises;
  • Work directly with customers to understand their needs and to help define our research topics;
  • Develop technical reports based on research including occasional experimentation using Sandia National Lab based experimental facilities.

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Qualifications We Require:

  • PhD in Mathematics, Engineering, or other relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience with modeling and simulation of nuclear power plants (e.g., control systems, severe accident analysis, or nuclear transport modeling)
  • Ability to conduct and communicate creative, independent research, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at scientific conferences
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience presenting R&D to customers and in a formal environment such as a professional conference
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++ or similar code for interfacing with various modeling environments
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of advanced encryption techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in the application and evaluation of advanced security technologies into nuclear power control systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning - Deep Learning, Neural Networks, Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing

About Our Team:

The Energy Security Department conducts applied cyber research and development on technologies to better secure our energy critical infrastructures and minimize our threat from cyber enabled nuclear proliferation. In addition to these two areas, we support other SNL cyber organizations in their mission space. Our department focuses on fully understanding the cyber risk to a critical infrastructure and developing tools to help mitigate those risks. This is done through our three main research thrusts: cyber risk management (including supply chain), secure architectures, and modeling and simulation. Our team performs research and development to solve questions such as what cyber risk is this infrastructure exposed to? What would a more secure control architecture look like? How would I model this environment to explore our potential solutions? Example of systems we look at would include nuclear power plant instrumentation and control systems, pipeline control systems, other energy systems, and nuclear non-proliferation technology. Our customers include multiple government sponsors such as the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, National Nuclear Security Administration, and other federal entities.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
