What Your Job Will Be Like:

Join our Digital Product Definition Team as a dedicated Software Integration Engineer, where we are building enterprise-scale model-based definition (MBD) and digital engineering capabilities for the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). In this dynamic role, you develop the software integrations, data pipelines, and automation capabilities that enable model-based definition (MBD) and digital engineering workflows. This role is ideal for individuals who thrives in a fast-paced and innovative environment.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design and implement backend services, CAD/PLM automation solutions, and data-interoperability frameworks that connect Model-Based Definition (MBD) models and systems throughout the product realization lifecycle.
  • Ensure effective data reuse across software applications to enhance interoperability and support the entire weapon life cycle.
  • Leverage strong software engineering fundamentals and knowledge of engineering data structures to drive success in your projects.
  • Collaborate closely with the Program Lead and Solutions Architects to align software solutions with strategic goals and technical requirements.
  • Contribute to the digitization of mechanical design and manufacturing processes, connecting data from various software applications to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate at the intersection of computer aided design (CAD) technologies, product data management (PDM), system architecture, and enterprise digital-thread workflows.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the next-generation digital engineering ecosystem.
  • Design, prototype, and deploy new software capabilities.
  • Adapt to rapidly evolving requirements, incorporating feedback from both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and iteratively refine solutions to achieve enterprise-level objectives in an agile manner.

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S> State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required, with up to 25% of travel necessary to support collaboration, deployment, and coordination activities across the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) complex.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java, with strong object-oriented programming (OOP) skills, and experience using DevOps practices such as CI/CD and containerization (Docker).
  • Experience working with SQL, PostgreSQL, or NoSQL databases for large or complex datasets, and developing or integrating ETL processes or structured data pipelines for engineering datasets.
  • Proficiency in developing automations, extensions, and workflows using PTC Creo Toolkits, Windchill REST/Java APIs, or similar CAD/PDM frameworks such as SOLIDWORKS/Enovia, Siemens NX/Teamcenter, etc.
  • Strong background in building backend services that interact with engineering data, product structures, or PLM systems.
  • Familiarity with Git, branching strategies, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Ability to translate UML, SysML, or architecture diagrams into implementable software designs
  • Experience in software development, enterprise system integration, CAD/PLM automation, model-based design and engineering, or digital-thread enablement.
  • Experience developing process automations for CAD workflows, model data validation, metadata extraction, and derivative artifact generation using familiarity with CAD data standards such as STEP AP242, QIF, JT, or GLTF.
  • Knowledge of modular software architecture, interface design, and data-modeling patterns, with a focus on designing modular, extensible, and maintainable software aligned with system architecture models.
  • Understanding of concurrency, multithreading, memory management, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to decompose complex problems and drive iterative, enterprise-aligned solutions while translating between engineering concepts and software implementation needs.

About Our Team:

The Digital Product Definition Team leads Sandia's efforts to develop, integrate, and sustain the digital engineering capabilities required to connect engineering design intent, computer-aided design (CAD) models, manufacturing information, and inspection data across Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) systems.

We build and deploy shared enterprise capabilities in partnership with multiple NSE sites to ensure consistent, standards-aligned, digital workflows. Our solutions enable interoperable mechanical and electrical design data to flow seamlessly across product lifecycle functions - including systems engineering, analysis, configuration management, manufacturing, and inspection.

Our team combines expertise in software engineering, systems architecture, CAD/PDM data structures, model-based definition, product data management (PDM), and industry product data standards. We focus on creating scalable and secure integrations that form the backbone of the digital thread across the NSE. We operate in an agile, collaborative environment that values technical rigor, creativity, and adaptability in support of mission-critical national security programs.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
