Job Summary
The Clinical Coordinator for the Undergraduate Nursing Program is responsible for coordinating and managing clinical placements, maintaining partnerships with healthcare facilities, and supporting nursing students' hands-on clinical education at Saint Mary's College of California. This role collaborates closely with the Academic Director, faculty, students, and external clinical partners to ensure compliance with program standards, accreditation requirements, and regulatory obligations while promoting a safe, effective, and high-quality clinical learning experience.
This position regularly exercises independent judgment and discretion in coordinating clinical partnerships, managing compliance, and making placement decisions. This position reports to the Academic Director of Specialties.
Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Placement Management
  • Secure, coordinate, and manage clinical placements for undergraduate nursing students in collaboration with faculty and healthcare partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clinical sites to ensure alignment with program learning objectives.
  • Schedule and organize clinical rotations based on curriculum requirements and site availability.
  • Independently negotiate and coordinate clinical affiliation agreements with healthcare partners in collaboration with college administration.
  • Proactively identify and develop new clinical placement opportunities to meet evolving program enrollment and curriculum needs.

Compliance and Documentation
  • Serve as the program's primary compliance officer for clinical education, independently interpreting and applying BRN regulatory requirements and CCNE accreditation standards.
  • Ensure student and faculty compliance with clinical site requirements, including immunizations, background checks, certifications, and onboarding documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records related to clinical placements, contracts, evaluations, and compliance in accordance with accreditation standards.
  • Update and manage records related to clinical sites, agreements, and site-specific requirements.

Student and Faculty Support
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for students regarding clinical placement questions or concerns.
  • Provide orientation and training to students and faculty on clinical policies, safety protocols, and site expectations.
  • Offer ongoing support during clinical rotations and address issues as they arise.
  • Identify at-risk students during clinical rotations and implement early intervention strategies in collaboration with faculty and academic support services.

Collaborations and Program Support
  • Collaborate with nursing faculty to align clinical experiences with didactic instruction and program objectives.
  • Represent the Nursing Program in professional meetings and conferences as appropriate.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with clinical site coordinators, healthcare leaders, and community stakeholders.

Quality Assurance and Evaluation
  • Develop and implement data-driven quality improvement initiatives based on clinical outcome metrics, student performance trends, and partner feedback.
  • Prepare and present clinical education reports to program leadership to support strategic planning and accreditation documentation.
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical experiences to ensure quality standards and accreditation requirements are met.
  • Collect and analyze feedback from students, faculty, and clinical partners to support continuous improvement.
  • Assist with accreditation and reporting requirements related to clinical education.

Instructional Responsibilities
  • Teach and/or oversee clinical instruction within an assigned content area, as approved by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).

Supervision, Hiring, and Personnel Evaluation
  • Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of qualified clinical faculty and staff in collaboration with the Academic Director.
  • Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and performance oversight to clinical faculty, preceptors, and support staff assigned to the undergraduate nursing program.
  • Conduct formal and informal performance evaluations in accordance with college policies, provide constructive feedback and identifying opportunities for professional development.
  • Address performance concerns in a timely and documented manner, escalating issues to the Academic Director as appropriate.

Other Duties as Assigned
Experience and Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with extensive clinical experience may be considered.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of recent clinical nursing experience providing direct patient care. BRN approval to teach in at least one designated clinical content area (e.g., OB, Pediatrics, Medical-Surgical, Geriatrics, Mental Health) required.
Skills/Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment in complex, time-sensitive clinical and administrative situations.
  • Knowledge of California BRN regulations governing clinical nursing education strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple clinical placements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, faculty, and healthcare partners.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and clinical standards.
  • Proficiency with technology used for teaching, learning, and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a higher education environment.
  • Experience developing, managing, or evaluating academic or clinical programs preferred.
  • Prior undergraduate teaching experience strongly preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:
Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
