What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Electromechanical Technologist to perform a variety of duties that will assist engineers in research, testing, and the development of mechanical and electromechanical engineering designs, fabrications, assemblies, and components. Roughly 80% of the work for this position is in the laboratory and involves working with and near explosive materials. The job is diverse and requires the ability to work within a changing environment and to think on your feet. Duties will include teaming with Principal Investigators and technical staff members, owning and maintaining a laboratory, firing explosives, using lasers, acquiring high-speed data, and reporting.

The ideal candidate is a person who wants to perform explosives research and development in a challenging fast paced environment where they will build, participate in, and document experiments performed inside and outside this lab. The position involves the formulation of energetic materials through various techniques, including mixing, printing, and deposition. Staff mentoring is included to grow the candidate into this position, which also includes extensive training to safely handle explosives and learn the appropriate work controls necessary for conducting safe operations in the laboratory.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Use hand & shop tools, solder, and assemble delicate devices
  • Utilize electrical diagnostic equipment
  • Draft detailed drawings for fabrication using software such as SolidWorks
  • Fabricate and assemble new or modified mechanical components or assemblies
  • Assemble explosive test articles
  • Handle explosive materials
  • Lead firing operations and data acquisition
  • Assist with test set up and clean up
  • Align and use a variety of Class IV lasers
  • Analyze data and recommend modifications to designs or test procedures to meet desired specifications
  • Work with changing projects and can expect responsibilities to be a mixture of novel design/development work followed by meticulous sample assembly tasks
  • Be involved with ES&H activities in the laboratory and documentation of operational procedures

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$74,700 - $144,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Associate¿s degree in science, engineering, or technology, an Explosive Technician Certificate, or four years of equivalent explosive experience
  • Experience working with mechanical and/or electrical systems and equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work under minimal direction to execute tasks
  • Experience implementing and following established documented safety procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex data acquisition equipment and high-speed video.
  • Experience using engineering drawings or schematics to maintain or build electromechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience with installing, testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and/or electrical systems and equipment
  • Experience with explosives or other hazardous materials in a high safety rigor environment
  • Experience with Class IV lasers
  • Knowledge of Sandia National Laboratories policies, practices, and procedures

About Our Team:

The Explosives Technologies Group (ETG) provides diverse technical expertise and an agile, integrated approach to solve complex challenges involving energetic materials. We design for performance and safety and deliver high-quality products and reliable components. ETG personnel perform critical assessments of energetic materials throughout their life cycles. We pursue state-of-the-art solutions for NW and WFO customers. The Explosives R&D Department develops a science-based understanding of the performance of explosive components and energetic materials (EM: high explosives, pyrotechnics, and propellants) using advanced manufacturing techniques, novel diagnostics, and proven characterization techniques to understand and model explosives and components.
