What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you ready to make a direct impact on National Security by supporting the U.S. Nuclear Stockpile Stewardship? We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Electromechanical Technologist to join our dynamic Building 809 & Tech Basis (022161) team.

In this role, you will be an essential part of the Navy Systems Tech Basis team and building operations, contributing to the design, development, and qualification activities that ensure the reliability and safety of our nation's nuclear deterrent. Your work will span a variety of technical challenges, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, hazards, safety, and security tasks.

Every day brings new opportunities to apply your skills and expertise. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Manage the shipping, receiving, and accountable inventory of critical assets, equipment, and hardware that support mission-critical operations, including inputting and tracking data in hardware management systems such as Aras.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and fellow technologists to define and execute tasks whether independently or as part of a high-performing team.
  • Perform hands-on assembly, troubleshooting, testing, and soldering on complex system-level mechanical and electronic hardware, including building kits for upcoming builds.
  • Support environmental testing activities at various facilities by performing mechanical setup and operating functional testers, ensuring proper electrical connections and communication with test units.
  • Build trusted relationships across the New Mexico Stockpile Systems Engineering community, becoming a valued technical resource.
  • Participate in the management and accountability of explosives inventory and Classified Administrative Specialist (CAS) responsibilities, with opportunities for specialized training in these areas.
  • Assist with machine shop operations within Building 809, including hardware modifications that require onsite machining using equipment such as lathes, mills, and drill presses.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Flexibility for occasional extended hours and travel may also be part of your experience.

If you're passionate about hands-on technical work that supports national security and want to be part of a collaborative, mission-driven team, this is the opportunity for you!

Salary Range:

$74,700 - $144,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Associate degree in STEM or relevant discipline, or equivalent experience including demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent with the ability to participate in random polygraph testing.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A strong passion for hands-on technical work that directly supports national security and the U.S. Nuclear Stockpile Stewardship.
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a mission-driven, multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with electromechanical systems, including assembly, troubleshooting, testing, and soldering of mechanical and electronic hardware.
  • Familiarity with hardware lifecycle management, including shipping, receiving, inventory control, and use of hardware management systems such as Aries.
  • Experience or willingness to be trained in Classified Administrative Specialist (CAS) responsibilities and explosives inventory management.
  • Experience using machine equipment (e.g., lathes, mills, drill presses, etc.) and supporting machine shop operations.
  • Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and commitment to quality in all aspects of your work.
  • Excellent communication skills to build trusted relationships across technical and engineering teams.

About Our Team:

Department 2216-1 Building 809 Operations and Navy Tech Basis Team is part of the New Mexico Stockpile Systems Engineering and Navy Systems Tech Basis (Group 2216) which plays a crucial role in Nuclear Weapon Stockpile Stewardship.

The Stockpile Tech Basis organization delivers agile solutions to the nuclear deterrent through our hardware lifecycle management team including full lifetime support for hardware needs for system level development and qualification activities from early identification of needs, provisioning, kitting, assembly of test assets, and final disposition of the hardware.

The 809OT provides support to building 809 and is responsible for managing operational safety, security, and quality in a 13,000 sq. ft. vault type room (VTR), which contains multiple high-bay and electrical laboratories.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
