What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking a highly motivated Computer/Software Engineer. Your primary focus will be to implement the digital signal processing in specialized radar systems for Nuclear Deterrence and National Security applications. The main project is a high-profile, fast-paced development project. You will become a member of a multi-discipline, success-oriented, high-performance team.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Develop new and contribute to existing software code bases using standard methodologies.
  • Find innovative ways to enhance our processes and products.
  • Contribute to improvement of development processes and techniques.
  • Assist project leads with schedule estimates based on tasking needs.
  • Gain and maintain a big picture awareness to help guide technical direction.
  • Develop test/acceptance procedures and document design definition.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.

Salary Range:

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E Computer Engineer candidate will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Demonstrated ability to execute and deliver technical work products with application of appropriate rigor and pedigree documentation (design/code reviews, technical oversight/approvals, project team concurrence, artifact generation, etc.).
  • Experience in computer systems design and software development for real-time and embedded processing systems, distributed processing systems, or real-time client server implementations.
  • Familiarity with hardware/software requirements generation for verification, validation and qualification.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multi-disciplinary team setting for a common purpose.

Also for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • HDL design experience with FPGAs
  • Experience with Vivado
  • Experience with C-like software development experience and the ability to pick up new programming languages (like Rust)
  • Knowledge of general test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, DVM, logic analyzers) and RF test equipment (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer)
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
  • Vitis Unified Software Platform
  • Petalinux
  • Linux kernel development
  • Rust
  • System Verilog
  • Real-Time Operating Systems
  • Experience with modern version control systems, preferably Git
  • Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, radar, and/or EW systems and principles
  • Ability to work effectively on both small and large development teams (two-to-eight members)
  • Motivated by working with a highly successful, dynamic project team delivering systems that impact our National Security.

About Our Team:

The Advanced Radar and Future Fuzing Department is the Nation's premier Advanced and Exploratory (A&E) design team for Nuclear Weapon (NW) Fuzes, which includes advanced radar/inertial sensors, weapon controllers, and communication bus architectures. We are responsible for generating new modular fuze concepts, designs, prototypes, tests, and analyses for next generation NW systems. The department teams extensively with other Sandia organizations to support National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Navy, and Air Force customers. We execute R&D for fuzing systems from the RF component level circuit design to Radar-Inertial system level design and analysis. The Department also provides ongoing support to NW Programs of Record (W88 ALT370, Mk21 AFA, B61-12, W93) through close partnership with our sister Department 5353, Radar Fuzing.
