Description
The College of Business (CoB) at the University of New England (UNE) invites applications for a full-time, teaching-track Assistant Professor in Sport Leadership & Management and Outdoor Business & Innovation, beginning August 2027. We are seeking candidates with a doctorate or master's degree in sports management, business, outdoor leadership or a closely related field (ABD considered), a strong record of teaching and thought leadership, and experience in the business of sports and/or outdoor recreation including work in industry, partnerships, a strong professional network.
This position will serve as a dual faculty line for both the Sports Leadership & Management and, Outdoor Business & Innovation programs. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in both programs for example: Introduction to Sports Management, Sports Marketing, Legal Issues in Sports and Recreation, Wilderness First Responder, Eco-Tourism. The position carries a 4-4 teaching load (four courses in the Fall semester and four courses in the Spring semester).
The College of Business prioritizes experiential learning, preparing students to apply their knowledge in practical settings. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to student engagement by creating dynamic, interactive learning experiences that foster critical inquiry, analytical thinking, and active participation. Experience creating or using Open Educational Resources and Open Access software is highly desirable and supports our commitment to zero-cost course materials.
This nine-month, teaching-track position offers a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience, along with opportunities for summer teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, and career advancement. The successful candidate will join a collegial, engaged faculty in a growing College of Business that is expanding its graduate, professional, and online offerings.

Responsibilities

• Teach a 4-4 course load of undergraduate courses across the Sport Leadership & Management and Outdoor Business & Innovation programs. Courses may include Introduction to Sport Management, Sport Marketing, Legal Issues in Sport and Recreation, outdoor leadership and field-based courses, Eco-Tourism, and other courses aligned with program needs and the candidate's expertise.
• Develop, revise, and assess curriculum in Sport Leadership & Management and Outdoor Business & Innovation to ensure alignment with industry trends, workforce needs, accreditation expectations, and program goals.
• Create dynamic, student-centered and experiential learning opportunities that connect classroom learning with the sport and outdoor industries through applied projects, industry partnerships, guest speakers, field experiences, events, internships, travel-based learning, and other high-impact practices.
• Mentor students in academic, professional, internship, and career development, helping students build professional skills, confidence, and industry connections.
• Establish and maintain relationships with sport organizations, outdoor businesses, recreation and tourism organizations, nonprofits, and other industry partners to support student learning, experiential opportunities, and workforce development.
• Use professional and industry networks to expand opportunities for student engagement, career exploration, internships, applied projects, and collaboration with external stakeholders.
• Foster critical inquiry, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and active participation by helping students apply knowledge in practical and unfamiliar situations and make well-supported decisions.
• Participate in program assessment, accreditation, recruitment, retention, and continuous improvement activities for the Sport Leadership & Management and Outdoor Business & Innovation programs.
• Contribute to departmental, College of Business, and University service activities and collaborate with faculty and staff to support program growth and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Qualifications
Master's degree in sport management, business, outdoor recreation, outdoor leadership, or a closely related field by the time of appointment; ABD candidates will be considered.

• Demonstrated teaching, training, mentoring, or professional experience related to sport management, outdoor recreation, outdoor business, tourism, business, or a closely related field.
• Ability to teach undergraduate coursework across both the Sport Leadership & Management and Outdoor Business & Innovation programs.
• Professional or industry experience in sport and/or outdoor recreation, including experience developing partnerships or working with external organizations and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated commitment to experiential, student-centered learning and the ability to create engaging learning experiences that foster critical inquiry, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and active participation.
• Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and collaborative communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctorate in sport management, business, outdoor recreation, outdoor leadership, or a closely related field.
• College-level teaching experience and a strong record of teaching effectiveness and thought leadership.
• Professional experience within the sport and/or outdoor recreation industries.
• An established professional network and demonstrated ability to develop industry partnerships that support student learning, experiential education, internships, and career development.
• Experience designing experiential, project-based, field-based, event-based, or travel-based learning opportunities.
• Experience supporting student internships, career readiness, and employer or industry partnerships.
• Experience teaching across multiple modalities, including in-person and online courses.
• Relevant professional certifications applicable to outdoor leadership, recreation, safety, or instruction.
